Gearing Up for Summer 2009

About the same time things slowed down at the end of last summer hiking-wise, I got a job working for ShipCompliant. Now that I’m in the swing of things with the working world and the weather is getting nice again, it’s time to start getting out and hiking more.

I have a couple of larger goals for TechTreks this summer. The first is to hike at a regular time and on a regular basis. As a part of this goal, I will do my best to announce the hikes at least 48 hours in advance. This should make it much easier for new people to join in and to plan for the hike in general. The second goal is to have at least two planned overnight outings to camp in Colorado. I’m hoping this will be a fun experience for a couple small groups of people to get to know each other better. These would probably be in the months of June, July, or August.

In other news, I’ve been managing to do a little hiking lately, regardless of the weather. I did the Royal Arch Trail this morning and happened to run in to a friend from high school (I’m from Ohio) at the top. Totally random. The running water (read: snow runoff) was a welcome sight and sound and the clear views and relaxation at the top were worth the work through the slush and ice.

Look for a hike announcement this week.

See you on the trails,

Ryan

Green Mountain Summit :: A Recap

We had perfect weather today for a hike to the summit of Green Mountain. The view at the top was unreal with 24-ish peaks visible in the distance with summit’s reaching 12k feet or more. On the way up, we traversed through Gregory Canyon and up the Ranger trail. On the way down, we hiked on the Saddle Rock trail, which was a good change of scenery. Even though ProTrails listed the hike as strenuous, I found it to be quite doable for any moderately athletic person with a couple of difficult stretches. Afterwards, we finished up with a quick meal at the Lazy Dog on Pearl on the roof.

Overall, the hike was great today and would only benefit from more people coming. So, if you’ve been thinking about it, following us on twitter, or reading the blog, it’s time to “take the plunge” and come enjoy the great outdoors with like-minded folks. We always have good discussions while hiking (today was mostly about iPhone apps and our current occupations) and always try to have a good/quick meal afterwards, so come join.

I’ll be attempting to run hikes every Sunday from now on, so expect an update this week about next Sunday’s hike. See you on the trails,

Ryan

Green Mountain Summit

Well … after a long hiatus, I’ll be leading a hike this weekend up to Green Mountain summit, which is pictured below. Its listed as just under 6 miles as a strenuous hike which is just what TechTreks needs to get going again. We will meet at 10am at the Gregory Canyon trailhead, which is just at the end of Gregory Canyon Rd. on this map. You can read more about the hike at ProTrails. Plan on a group meal somewhere on Pearl St. after the hike as well. See you on the trails,

Ryan

The Third Hike :: Bear Peak!!!

Update: The hike will leave from the park ranger station at Chautauqua Park at 9:30am. I will be at Chautauqua Park at 9am to meet people. See you there.

Since I didn’t announce in time last week, the hike that had been planned will be moved to this week. TechTreks will be hiking Bear Peak this Sunday. To give adequate time and to take advantage of better temperatures, the hike will be leaving at 9:30am. I will be arriving at a TBA location Chautauqua Park between 9 and 9:15am to meet people. Depending on how long the hike takes, an impromptu group meal may occur afterwards. This post will be updated when a meeting place is decided. Thoughts on whether the hike should start within biking distance of downtown Boulder or, with the aim of making the hike more manageable, have it start a short drive away from Boulder? Check out the calendar and follow TechTreks on twitter. See you on the trails,

Ryan

The Second Hike :: A Recap

This last Sunday, Jared, his daughter, and I hiked from Chautauqua Park up to Royal Arch and back. It was a great hike on a beautiful, but hot, day. Jared and I discussed the rebranding of the site briefly, but mostly enjoyed the weather and exercise. See flickr for photos. Afterwards, Jared and I went to Illegal Pete’s on the hill for some delicious burritos. See you on the trails,

The Rebranding :: Welcome to TechTreks!

Although the “Hikes for Hackers” moniker rolled of the tongue nicely, I felt that there was something inherently intimidating with the word “Hackers.” It seemed to paint an instant picture in anyone’s mind that wasn’t necessarily positive for the group. To that end, I decided to rename the group to TechTreks. This did two things. First, it generalized the target audience a little to something more acceptable (if that is the right term) by our social selves. Second, it dropped the restriction on the types of endeavors that the group might take. I like the change and I hope you do too. Feel free to email me at ryan at techtreks dot org and follow TechTreks on twitter. See you on the trails,

Ryan

The First Hike :: A Recap

The first hike was this morning. Thanks to Jared, Jason, and Stepan for coming out. There was a little confusion at the beginning as I started a hike that I organized in the wrong place. Oops. We ended up meeting at the top of the trail and hiked back down together. A post should be up soon with information on the next hike, which should be happening two Sundays from now. See you on the trails,

Ryan
